The Ghost (of Speech) Walks There: Acknowledgment for Jacques Derrida A.N. Akwanya (12-2005) Africa and World Literature is a journal keenly aware of literary theory and the changes that have come to this discipline during the past forty years are of particular interest. Africa and World Literature Conference and Journal can hardly omit to make acknowledgement of the passing of Professor Jacques Derrida, one of the greats of the period mentioned, which occurred on October the eighth 2004, after an extraordinarily productive life as a scholar. In some departments of learning, like philosophy, he is probably the best known name of the last quarter of the twentieth century, and certainly one of the most important thinkers of the twentieth century. The following is from a 2003 study: Algerian-born French philosopher Jacques Derrida has had an enormous impact on intellectual life around the world. So much so that his work has been the subject, in whole or in part, of more than 400 books. In the areas of philosophy and literary criticism alone, Derrida has been cited more than 14,000 times in journal articles over the past 17 years.... More than 500 US, British and Canadian dissertations treat him and his writings as primary subjects. He came into prominence in America with his critical approach or methodology or philosophy of deconstruction, and it is this line of thought that continues to identify him. (Klages, ‘Jacques Derrida’)

| A sound knowledge of language is essential for a literary scholar in order to see and analyse the infinite variety of the movements of thought in the literary work of art. In this way the student grows in clarity of thought and perception, and develops the mind's creative capabilities. This is one of the reasons why the graduates of English language and literary studies find employment in a vast range of activities in the service industry as well as in the management and productive sectors of the economy. |
