About Undergraduate programmes
General Information and Academic Programme The Department of English offers three kinds of programme:
a. A 4-year B. A. Standard Degree Programme by entrance examination
b. A 4-year B. A. Combined Honours Standard Degree Programme by entrance examination.
c. A 3-year B. A. Standard Degree Programme by Direct Entry.
The Department also has three stress areas: Literature, Language, Oral Literature and offers such Combined Honours Programmes as Archaeology/English, Education/English, French/English, German/English, History/English, Music/English, Religion/English, and Theatre Arts/English.
Philosophy
The relation between literary art, language, and thought has been known and discussed at least since Aristotle. A sound knowledge of langauge is essential for a literary scholar in order to see and analyze the infinite variety of the movements of thought in the literary work of art. In this way the students grows in clarity of thought and perception, and develops the mind’s creative capabilities. This is one of the reasons why the graduates of English language and literary studies find employment in a vast range of activities in the service industry as well as in the management and productive sectors of the economy.
Entry Requirements
Candidates for admission must satisfy the University minimum entry requirement. In addition:
•Candidates admitted by entrance examination must have passed English Language and English Literature at least at credit level in the WAEC examination r its equivalent.
•Direct Entry candidates must have passed with a grade of at least D in English Literature in G. C. E A/L or at an equivalent standard at the higher School Certificate or at an equivalent examination like N. C. E stress areas and code.
The Course in the programme are grouped into four main stress areas as follows:

4. Traditional African Verbal Arts
